Understanding our Services: The Consultation
What is a Yard to Fork Consultation?
Think of this as a first date between your goals and your yard’s reality. It is a dedicated, 60-120 minute site visit where one of our expert Urban Farmers walks your property with you. We aren't just looking at the grass; we’re looking at sun patterns, drainage, soil health, and how your family actually uses the space.
We offer two main types:
The Edible Garden Consultation: Perfect for those wanting to install raised beds or seasonal vegetable gardens.
The 3D Foodscape Consultation: For the visionaries who want a complete edible transformation, including fruit trees, perennial herbs, and pollinator-friendly paths. Whether it’s a small space or the entire yard, we create the plan for you to have the yard of your dreams with function and bountiful beauty. Learn more about a Foodscape installation and design.
Not sure which consultation might be right for you? Don’t worry, we created a short quiz that helps narrow down the best fit for your needs. Check out this consultation quiz to find out what type is right for you.
Who is it for?
The short answer: almost everyone.
You're brand new to food gardening. You've never grown anything beyond a houseplant, and you're not sure where to begin. A consultation gives you a grounded, no-overwhelm starting point tailored to your yard and your life.
You've tried before, but something didn't click. Maybe you planted a vegetable bed a few years ago and it fizzled out. A consultation can help you figure out why — soil issues, wrong placement, wrong plants for your climate — and set you up to actually succeed this time.
You have a specific vision but need expert eyes. You know you want a raised bed kitchen garden, or you're dreaming of a food forest in the back corner. A consultation helps you stress-test that vision and fill in the gaps before you invest time or money.
You're not sure if Yard to Fork is right for you. That's okay. A consultation is genuinely a great way to understand what our services include, how we work, and whether the fit makes sense — no pressure, no obligation.
You're planning ahead for a new property or a yard renovation. Getting expert input early can save you from costly mistakes and help you design with intention from the start.
What’s included?
Depending on your needs, a consultation can cover:
A site assessment of your yard's sun exposure, soil conditions, drainage, and existing layout
Recommendations for what to grow based on your climate, lifestyle, and how much time you want to invest
An honest conversation about what's realistic — and what might need a little more planning
A clear picture of what working with Yard to Fork could look like, from design through ongoing care
Answers to every question you've been sitting on, big or small
You'll leave with clarity — and usually, a little bit of excitement too.
When is the best time to schedule?
Right now. In the Sacramento region, we are blessed with a year-round growing season, but the best "planning" window is usually late winter (January/February) for spring gardens and summer (July/August) for fall/winter gardens. Scheduling early ensures you aren’t at the bottom of the installation waitlist when the weather gets perfect. Don’t worry, we won’t plant anything that isn’t right for the season. Each garden bed installation comes with complimentary planting, even if that means we come back a month or two later.
Why does this service exist?
We've seen what happens when people skip straight to implementation without a plan. Beds get placed in the wrong spot. Plants go in at the wrong time. Enthusiasm fades when results don't come.
Consultations exist because good gardens start with good information — and good information should be specific to you, not pulled from a generic article online.
Yard to Fork was built on the belief that everyone deserves access to the kind of thoughtful, experienced guidance that used to only come with knowing the right person. A consultation is how we deliver that — one yard at a time.
It's also how we make sure that everything we do together is actually designed to work for your space, your schedule, and your goals. For us, it's not just a first step — it's the foundation everything else is built on.
Pro Tip from the Farmers: Before your consultation, keep a "Grocery List" of the produce you buy most often. Seeing that list helps us design a garden that actually lowers your grocery bill!
